Science & Philosophy

The Method, decoded.

The Tracy Anderson Method is not a workout brand that adopted a point of view — it is a body of research that became a practice. Here is how it works, in plain language, and why it behaves so differently from everything else in fitness.

The core principles

Six ideas that define the work.

01

Accessory muscles, not just the big movers

The Method deliberately targets the small accessory muscles that conventional training ignores. By keeping these muscles consistently engaged, the work builds long, balanced strength and creates balance where there is imbalance in the body — regardless of genetic shape.

02

Choreography that never repeats

Content changes constantly — Tracy overhauled her original research-group workouts every 10 days, and today the Online Studio delivers new classes every single week. The body never fully adapts, so there is no plateau.

03

Strength in every direction

Movement spans multiple planes rather than single-plane repetition. Multidirectional sequences build deep, balanced strength and train coordination, awareness, and control at the same time.

04

Rooted in 25 years of research

The Method began with Tracy's five-year study of hundreds of women in Indiana, where she created custom workouts and diets, tracked and graphed outcomes, and refined the system before ever bringing it to the public.

05

Mind-body connection as a discipline

Sequences are designed as physical and mental puzzles. The work trains awareness and control so the body becomes stronger, more fluid, and more resilient — members consistently describe it as nervous-system calming as much as body sculpting.

06

Designed for longevity, not trends

This is a movement practice meant to be done for decades. Choreography and science are blended into a practice designed for longevity — members report practicing for 15, 16, even 20 years without plateauing.

The origin of the science

It started with a five-year study, not a marketing plan.

After gaining 40 pounds on a dance scholarship in New York — weight that over-exercising and under-eating could not budge — Tracy Anderson turned her own body into a research problem. The answer was not more effort in the same patterns; it was entirely different patterns.

She took her early findings to Indiana and assembled a test group of hundreds of women. Over five years she created custom workouts and diets, overhauled them every 10 days to keep the accessory muscles consistently engaged, and tracked and graphed every outcome.

That protocol — strategic variation, accessory-muscle focus, multidirectional movement — became the Tracy Anderson Method. Twenty-five years later it still evolves weekly, which is precisely the point: a body that is never allowed to fully adapt is a body that never plateaus.

“Bodies don’t care about trends. Bodies respond only to what is true.”

Original research, not repackaged trendsBuilt from a five-year study of hundreds of women, with programs refined continuously for 25 years. Most programs adapt existing modalities (HIIT, pilates, lifting) and rarely change their core programming.
Ever-changing choreographyNew content weekly; the original protocol changed every 10 days to prevent adaptation and plateau.Fixed class formats and progressive-overload templates repeat the same movement patterns for months.
Accessory-muscle focusTargets small stabilizing muscles to re-proportion the body and correct imbalance.Focuses on large prime movers, which can reinforce existing imbalances.
Equipment philosophyHandcrafted wooden apparatus (MYMODE), 95% plastic-free, free of PVC, formaldehyde, and phthalates.Mass-produced equipment commonly made with plastics, foams, and chemical finishes.
Creator-led, studio-provenEvery sequence is designed by Tracy and delivered by trainers she personally selects and rigorously certifies.Instructor-dependent quality; programming often varies widely across trainers and locations.
Frequently asked

Everything people want to know.

What is the Tracy Anderson Method?

A movement practice built on 25 years of research into how the body responds to strategic, ever-changing choreography. It targets accessory muscles across multiple planes of motion to build long, balanced strength and create proportion — designed for longevity, not trends.

I'm brand new. Where should I start?

A4 is the official on-ramp: a $9.99, 30-day curriculum with 5-to-30-minute sessions designed to build consistency. Complete 33 sessions in 30 days and you unlock exclusive Online Studio pricing. Alternatively, the Online Studio offers 14 days of complimentary access.

Do I need equipment to start?

No. A4 and most Online Studio classes are mat-based. Apparatus programs like MYMODE, Growth Rings, and HeartStone are optional deepenings of the practice.

What's the difference between the Online Studio and TA LIVE?

The Online Studio ($90/mo) is on-demand with new classes weekly. TA LIVE adds 240+ live-streamed classes each month from the New York, Los Angeles, and Madrid studios; it's sold bundled with the Online Studio for $130/mo.

Can I access MYMODE content without buying the apparatus?

No. MYMODE is a program that includes the apparatus and its universe of custom content. An active Online Studio subscription is also required to access MYMODE content.

Where are the physical studios?

New York (59th Street, Tribeca), Los Angeles (Santa Monica, Studio City), the Hamptons (Water Mill, Sag Harbor), Miami, Montana, Madrid, and London.

Why does the choreography keep changing?

The body adapts to repeated movement, which causes plateaus. Tracy's original research protocol changed workouts every 10 days; today the Online Studio releases new choreography every week so the accessory muscles stay consistently challenged.

Why doesn't Tracy speak during class?

It's strategic. Tracy's early research on 150 women found the brain is more engaged in the absence of verbal instruction — following movement without verbal disruption opens new neural pathways and strengthens the mind-body connection. If you need verbal help, trainer breakdown sessions accompany every week's classes.

When is new content released?

New Online Studio workouts are uploaded every Wednesday evening (ET), replacing the prior week's content — including downloaded videos in the mobile app. Each release includes leveled core classes, breakdowns, previews, Tracy's post-class chat, and 8 electives.

How do I know which level to choose?

The Online Studio includes a free virtual Body Consultation — a questionnaire in your profile that recommends beginner, intermediate, or advanced based on your body type and goals. Each week's release also includes level assessment tips.

How much does TA LIVE cost, exactly?

It's a $40/month add-on to the Online Studio: $130/month total ($65 off month one), $663 semi-annual (save 15%), or $1,170 annual (save 25%). No free trial, and it requires an active Online Studio subscription. Live classes are not recorded.

Is there a student discount?

Yes — 50% off the monthly Online Studio plan for students actively enrolled in an accredited higher-education program with a valid student ID.

How long are MYMODE sessions?

It varies by Mode: Genesis (beginner) is 30 minutes, Refresh (intermediate) is 45 minutes, and the two advanced Modes, Primal and Peak, are 60 minutes each.

Can I try MYMODE before buying it?

Yes — MYMODE private sessions are offered in all studios, with a minimum pack of 3 sessions (which can be split into two 90-minute sessions). Contact your preferred studio directly.

Can I finance a MYMODE purchase?

US customers can pay monthly via Affirm (3–48 month terms, soft credit check that doesn't affect your score, no late fees). International orders are one-time payment only. MYMODE ships worldwide with emailed tracking.

What is the return policy?

Full-price items can be returned within 14 days of delivery, in original condition and packaging. MYMODE and HeartStone are final sale, as are beauty products, undergarments, and swimwear. Shipping fees aren't refunded.

Can I pause my subscription?

Yes — from the My Account page you can pause for 1, 2, or 3 months self-serve (longer via customer support) and resume anytime. Subscriptions auto-renew unless cancelled through customer service.

Can I watch classes offline or on my TV?

The Online Studio mobile app (iOS and Android) downloads the current week's videos for offline viewing; they expire when new content releases. For TVs, cast from your laptop or phone to Apple TV, Roku, or Alexa devices.
